Find and Fix Troublesome Roof Leaks

Spring in the Northwest means beautiful flowers, budding cherry blossom trees in bloom, and a lot of rain and wind. Some days, you can just count on being saturated with rain when you go outside. As a homeowner, it’s easy to forget how hard your roof is actually working on those stormy days. But, when something goes wrong and you notice a potential leak on the roof of your home, things can change quickly and you’re soon searching for the exact source of the leak. Finding and fixing troublesome roof leaks is important.

Water- how to find and fix roof leaks

Tip #1: Search for roof problems by inspecting it regularly.
If you regularly inspect your roof, you’ll be able to see if there are missing shingles or other issues in the roof such as cracks, tearing, or curling. If you notice any of this kind of damage, you can usually replace or fix it, but if you notice extensive damage, you may need to do a complete re-roofing job. Not sure if there is a problem? A roofing professional will inspect the area and let you know what the solution is.

Tip #2:  Be sure there is proper ventilation.
When vents on your roof or roof overhang are not working, or if you simply do not have enough in place, mold can gather inside your home and other damage can occur. Vent problems around your roof such as missing or loose nails mean that extensive damage could occur on the roof as well as underneath the shingles. If any of the vents are damaged, there is really no other solution except to replace them. Duct tape or caulking won’t work!

Tip #3: Fix small problems.
Small problems may seem small at the time, but they can turn into huge issues if you let them go. Tiny holes in shingles can be sneaky because they can cause rot and other damage before you even notice a leak. If you do notice that there is a small leak, take care of the problem quickly so it doesn’t get out of hand.

Tip #4: Maintain your gutters.
Spring rain and wind can be harmful to your roof as well as your gutters, so be sure to have a professional roofer look at your roof as well as the entire gutter system on your home regularly.  A trained professional has the experience and expertise that is needed to notice the signs of roof damage before you might.

If you ever notice that your roof has black stains or if there is water damage or water spots on the wall or ceiling inside your house, this can be a sign of a serious problem that needs to be investigated quickly. A roofing repair professional will know what materials will be needed to tackle potential problem spots and get them fixed.
